Some fantastic new books have arrived for our group library: Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth and Michel Odent's Birth Reborn, as well as two of Naomi Stadlen's books (she's the author of What Mothers Do... When it looks like nothing, and she's an LLL Leader too!). Any subscribing member may borrow books from the library.

For a short time only, half-yearly membership subscriptions are now available for £13 (a great savings, and about as much as you'd pay to buy just one of these book!). Cheques, cash and credit card payments accepted for subscriptions. Sales of books (Art of Breastfeeding now in stock!) and leaflets are currently cash only.

This will be an informal moment to share common concerns with other breastfeeding mothers.

We're having a picnic to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week! http://worldbreastfeedingweek.org/ You are invited to meet on the grassy area in the playground opposite the duck ponds in the middle of Tooting Bec Common 10-12 Tuesday 2nd August. Please bring food for your family and some to share if you are able - we are hoping for good weather!! This is a chance to chat and catch up on all things breastfeeding related and is a great way for your friends to meet the group too. All pregnant and breastfeeding mums babies and toddlers are welcome. As this is the school holidays we know that bigger siblings will want to join us - hopefully the playground will be a chance to let off steam.

Feel free to just come and listen if you prefer.

Birth and Breastfeeding Meeting for Mums to be and New Mums

Tuesday 5th July we will be holding a special meeting on how different birth experiences present different challenges for breastfeeding. We will have plenty of information to take away and lots of time for discussion. Please tell all your pregnant friends - lots of mums say that knowing where to get help in the early days makes a big difference.

Membership Renewals

Its also membership/subscription renewal time of year so if you would like to renew or to become a new member then you can do this on Tuesday. Membership is £25 for a family membership and £15 for an unwaged family. You receive a subscription of six issues of 'Breastfeeding Matters' our magazine full of articles by mums for mums (and dads too of course!), you are able to borrow books from our library (books like 'Baby Led Weaning' 'How to Lose Weight When You're Breastfeeding' 'Nighttime Parenting' 'The No Cry Sleep Solution'), and La Leche League UK holds a three day conference every year for its members with talks by leading experts. As we are a charity run by volunteers memberships help to meet the costs of keeping our resources available to all breastfeeding mums.

Call for Help!! and Group News
Dear mothers,
Your local group depends on your help! please consider volunteering to help with computer skills, organising our library of breastfeeding books, hosting a coffee morning in your area, fundraising ideas or one of many more roles, all mother-sized. We especially need helpers just now as Scarlet is expecting her baby at any moment so we have fewer Leaders to run the group.

We also depend on donations, magazine subscriptions to our UK mothers' magazine Breastfeeding Matters (£25), memberships (£25), book and leaflet sales to fund all our work, from telephone helping calls to training much-needed new breastfeeding counsellors. We receive no other funding and all the Leaders are voluntary. Please support us so we can support the next mother who needs us!

We are hoping to have someone bring in some slings to demonstrate.

The subject is "Your family and breastfeeding. Top tips for the early weeks, your changing relationships, preparing older children". Please do come along whether you are a brand new um or an old hand as there will be something for everyone. We will as always have plenty of time to discuss any particular issues and you will be able to get one to one help from a leader should you need to.

Babies and toddlers are welcome please bring a healthy snack to share if you are able. We are all very relaxed and friendly so please don't worry about being late/your baby crying/anything else - we've all been there!! Hope to see you there!

The spring workshop is coming up on Saturday 13th March in Horsham, Surrey RH13 9LA. This is a wonderful opportunity to hang out with lots of breastfeeding mothers and La Leche League Leaders, recharge your batteries and to attend different talks on the subject of breastfeeding. The first talk with Deborah Robertson will be on counselling skills and sharing breastfeeding information, the second will be a group discussion 'LLL questions, issues and feedback', and the last will be on biological nurturing and how skin to skin contact helps mothers and babies.

Dear Mothers,

We have moved our regular meeting to a Tuesday as more people were available to meet on this day and decided to hold the meetings at members' houses for a more relaxed atmosphere. If you've not been to a meeting at someone's house before the format is the same - relaxed and friendly, anyone who can bring a snack to share does, tea or coffee is made by whoever has a spare pair of hands and then we will have a topic of discussion or we can talk about anything that is a 'burning' issue for those who come along. We are available for one to one help with issues if that's what you need, or come along if you simply want to have a chat and have someone else make you a cup of tea! Don't worry about being late or if your baby is cranky - we've all been there!!

The next event is a coffee morning at Scarlet's house in Furzedown (between Streatham and Tooting) 10-12 on Tuesday 9th February. Please email scarlet_taloula@yahoo.com or call 07870 647425 for the address.

The next series meeting will be on Tuesday 23rd February 10-12 again at Scarlet's house as above.

Now we really need your ideas and help as we urgently need to raise funds to keep our group running!

As you know La Leche League is a charity and all the leaders are volunteers. It costs us about £200 per year to run the group (administration costs, leaflets, refreshments, helping phone calls, training new leaders etc) and we would love to hear from you if you have a nifty idea for how we could raise some money!

We plan to have a bake sale coffee morning which we will let you know about soon, but here are some other ways you could help:

1. You could give us any baby related books or clothes which you no longer need. We will then sell these on Ebay and the profits will go to the group.
2. Do you have a pregnant or new mum friend for whom a subscription to 'Breastfeeding Matters' our mother's magazine would make a nice gift? Membership fees are £25 and if you order direct through us then a precentage of the fee goes to the group. There is also a 'new mum' and 'back at work mum' pack of helpful leaflets priced at £3.50 which you can order through us for your friends - vital information for those early days!
3. Are there any books which you would like to buy like 'Baby Led Weaning' or 'How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen so Kids Will Talk'. Have a look at the bookshop at www.lllgbbooks.co.uk and then if you place your order through us we get some funds for the group.
4. You could renew your membership to La Leche League through the group. Maybe you're thinking about baby number two (or three?!)
5. If La Leche League has helped you and you'd like to help make sure we can be there to meet the next mum's needs you can make a donation directly to the group our leaders also take calls from the National Helpline.

LIBRARY BOOK AMNESTY! If you have one of the group's library books please don't feel embarassed we know that life takes over and sometimes its hard to get to the group just to return a book! Please contact Scarlet on scarlet_taloula@yahoo.com and we will try and work out a way for us to collect it! If you want to keep it/your toddler has trashed it (its happened to me!)/you can't find it then just let us know and we can sort out reimbursing the group for a replacement copy.
